Option Description

This course focusses on gaining an understanding of science and scientific issues through investigation. The course is made up of two semesters: Semester A - Making a difference in our local environment and Semester B - Food Science. If there is time at the end of the year there may also be a personal project in the area of sports science.



Option Overview

Semester A
Making a Difference in our Local Area
This semester will build your field based practical skills as we investigate the health of a local area such as the estuary or a nearby stream.
This will involve physical testing of things like flow rates, turbity, temperature, chemical testing of the water and biological observations and data collection of plants and animals in the area.
You will then make a plan with the help of local experts to make a difference to this area.

Semester B
Food Science
This semester will focus on lab based skills in the area of food science.
We will be investigating chemical reactions and microbiology in baking.

Pathway

This course leads on to any of the level 2 sciences including Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Physics.

Assessment Information

Note that the new standards are not currently available to display.
This course will offer 2 internal assessment standards
1. Carry out a range of investigations in semester 1 with a further assessment opportunity in semester 2 if needed
2. Investigate a chemical reaction in a context

This will provide a total of 11 credits at level 1

NCEA Levels 1, 2 & 3 courses will be made up of a selection of the stated standards. This will happen at the beginning of the year with the assigned teacher.
